The Alex Awards are given to ten books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18. The winning titles are selected from the previous year's publishing. The Alex Awards were first given annually beginning in 1998 and became an official ALA award in 2002.

Awarded biennially, the AIYLA identifies and honors the very best writing and illustrations by Native Americans and Indigenous peoples of North America.

Named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott, this award is given annually by the Association for Library Service to Children to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

African American authors and illustrators are honored for outstanding inspirational and educational contributions in books that promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples and their contribution to the realization of the American dream of a pluralistic society.

Fifteen books are selected annually by Missouri librarians and voted on by high school students across the state. Sponsored by the Missouri Association of School Librarians. (MASL)

The Geisel Award, named for Theodore Geisel--better known as Dr. Seuss, is given annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the United States during the preceding year.

The award recognizes children’s books that effectively promote an appreciation for gardening, plants and the environment and is given by the American Horticultural Society and the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s International Junior Master Gardener program.

MASL’s six Readers Awards represent the best current youth literature available to students of different grade levels.

The Newbery Medal, named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery, is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.

The Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal is awarded annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished informational book published in the United States in English during the preceding year. The award is named in honor of Robert F. Sibert, the long-time President of Bound to Stay Bound Books, Inc. of Jacksonville, Illinois. ALSC administers the award.

Beginning in 2006 USBBY has selected an honor list of international books for young people. The USBBY Outstanding International Books List is published each year in the February issue of School Library Journal and on this website.
