MNGT 2100 - Management Theory and Practice

This guide outlines how to do library research for some of the assignments used in Webster University Introduction to MNGT 2100 course.

Drucker assignment

This assignment may ask you to find items written by Peter Drucker. Drucker was one of the most influential writers of management articles and books, and they are still relevant today.

Students: Please see your instructor or the World Classroom/Canvas course page for the full assignment.

Find articles written by Peter Drucker

Most of the periodical articles written by Drucker were originally published in the magazine, Harvard Business Review (HBR). The full-text for the HBR is available in the Business Source Complete database. You may select the database link below to search, or keep reading this page to see how to search for the full-text of an article using the library's Journals & Magazine List when you have a citation.

Using the Journals and Magazines list to find full-text articles

The Journals and Magazines list provides access to full text articles from thousands of periodicals. In this example we'll search for the following article that was published in the Harvard Business Review, but these directions can apply to any periodical or journal.

Let's find this article:

Drucker, P. F. (1992). The new society of organizations. Harvard Business Review, 70(5), 95-105.

1. Begin at the Webster University Libraries' homepage, at library.webster.edu.  From the homepage, click the tab labeled Journals & magazines above the search box

2. In the "Title begins with" search box, enter the periodical name (e.g. Harvard Business Review) and click the "Search" button

3. The results show the databases and the dates for which full text is available, or if the periodical in available in print in the library. In the screenshot of the search results, we can see that the database Business Source Complete has the full text of the Harvard Business Review from 1922 to the present, so select that database.

Note: You may be prompted to log in with your Webster University ID number. If you don't know it, here's an FAQ to find your student ID

Journals and Magazines list search results shows the databases where Harvard Business Review magazine is full-text.

4. The database takes you to the publication record page for that periodical. To find your full text article, you may either:

  • Browse to the year, issue and article you need or
  • Click the link to "Search within this publication" to search for words from the article title or on a topic

We've added arrows pointing out the list of years for browsing and the search within this publication link

5. If you use the "Search within this publication" option:

  • Note that the database inserts the periodical name in the top box (e.g. JN "Harvard Business Review')
  • Type the author's name (e.g. Drucker) in the second search box. To the right of that search box, use the drop-down menu to change the index to AU Author
  • In the third box, you can type some keywords or phrases. In our example, we've added the phrase new society of organizations. You can use the drop-down menu again to change the index to TI Title, though this is not always necessary

NoteOur search in the database Business Source Complete might look like the following screenshot

What if the article you need is not available from the library?

If a search of the Journals & Magazines list does not find the periodical you need, or if the article you want is not available, we may be able to get a copy from another library, if you can wait 2-3 business days.

For more information on how to request an article, view the FAQ: How do I request an article through ILLiad/Interlibrary Loan?

What if something unexpected happens?

Your search finds more than one article

Sometimes articles are re-printed in another issue of a periodical or perhaps in a different periodical or as a chapter in a book. Select the item that most closely matches the one that your instructor cited. If in doubt, ask your instructor.

Database search results for articles with drucker as the author and managing oneself in the title shows two articles: One published in 2005 and the other in 1999.

You aren't able to access or print the article

The two most common reasons for this are:

  • Your instructor gives you a permalink to the article but it doesn't work.
    • A permalink is intended to link you to the article record within a database. However, permalinks sometimes break or are not allowed by the publisher.
  • The full-text of some Harvard Business Review articles is only available via the PDF link in the database record. That is, the publisher offers limited access so the full-text cannot be printed or saved, and a permalink is not active for the article.

If either of these happens, use the Journals & Magazines List directions above to search for the article and read it online.

The detailed record for the article Managing Oneself showing the permalink created via the tools menu and the note "Publisher offers limited access to this article. The full text cannot be printed or saved."

You can't find the article

Use the library's Ask A Librarian service. Be prepared to help us help you by giving us as much information about the article you need as possible; At a minimum try to give us the author, article title, periodical title and year of publication.
