About Black History Month

Black History Month has its roots in historian Carter G. Woodson's establishment of "Negro History Week" in Frebruary 1926. Started as a way to recognize the importance African American history in the larger landscape of US history, it evolved into Black History Month in 1970 as Kent State celebrated Black History and culture from January through February. In 1976, President Gerald Ford established February as Black History Month, a time to recognize the often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans.
