Burning a Data CD

Burning on a Mac

Burning a Data CD on Windows with Sonic RecordNow! 7

The following instructions are for using Sonic RecordNow! to burn CD-Rs at the library.

Using the following instructions, you will be able to continue adding files to the disc with the versions of Sonic RecordNow! and Roxio that are on library computers until the disc is full or you finalize it. Although CDs burned with Sonic RecordNow! and left open appear to be more compatible with PC CD drives than those burned with Roxio and left open, if you plan to share your discs with others you may want to finalize the disc by clicking on the "Finalize disc" link that appears on the home screen since this will make your files readable in almost any computer’s CD drive.

  1. Place a blank CD-R/CD-RW in your computer’s CD drive.
  2. Launch RecordNow! from the Programs Menu.
  3. From the Quick Start Links on the home menu, Choose "Data Disc" Select Data CD Project
  4. Click on the wrench-shaped Customize icon in the next screen Select Data CD Project
  5. The Options window will open. In the left column click on the word "Advanced" under the heading Data. Select Data CD Project
    • If you want to leave the disc open to add more files later with a PC that has RecordNow!
Set the Type pull down menu to "Track at Once (TAO), Open."
    • If you want to close the disc after your burn session in order to protect your files from possible corruption and allow you to read the files on PCs that do not have RecordNow!,
Choose "Track at Once (TAO), Closed."
  6. Click on the the OK button.
  7. The Options box will close.

  8. Enter a title for your disc in the box that says "Volume Label"
  9. Then click "Add Files and Folders." Use the "Select files and folders to add" box to browse to the files you want to burn to the disc. Highlight the files you want to add to the burn list and click on the "Add" button.
  10. Note: You should have been saving frequently while working on your data project!
The library provides a secure space for you to use while you are working. If you do not save your files and the computer crashes or locks up, you will probably lose your work. Look for this secure space under My Computer > Your computer’s number on ‘opac2\userhome$’ (H:), or in your software application choose Save as… and select Your computer’s number on ‘opac2\userhome$’ (H:). You won’t be able to save your file using this method until it’s been saved once to the H: drive or another form of removable data storage (i.e., flash drive, CD, floppy, zip disk.)

  11. When all the files you want to burn in this session appear in the Sonic window, click on the red burn button.
    Select Data CD Project
  12. After a few minutes the message "Burn completed, your disc was created successfully".
  13. The CD-R drive should automatically open.
  14. Click on the button that says "Done."

Finalize the CD

When you are finished adding files to your CD and want to make it so that it can no longer be written to or deleted.

  1. From the home screen, click on the Quick Link for Finalize Disc. In the pop-up box, click yes.
  2. The disc will be ejected when it is finished.
