About the Eden-Webster Library System

The Eden-Webster Library System is a cooperative program of Eden Theological Seminary and Webster University. The Eden-Webster Library System was originally established in 1969 as the Eden-Webster Library on the campus of Eden Seminary. The System entered a new phase in 2003 with the construction of the Emerson Library on the Webster campus, the hiring of new staff for the seminary library, and the renovation of Luhr Library on the Eden campus. The unique character of each institution contributes to the richness of the library collections:

  • Eden Theological Seminary is an ecumenical school related to the United Church of Christ . Eden offers programs leading to the Master of Divinity, Master of Theological Studies, Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies, and Doctor of Ministry degrees.
  • Webster University is an independent, multicampus university with students at 106 U.S. and international extended campuses. Webster offers Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Arts, Sciences, Business Administration, Fine Arts, Music, and Nursing; Master of Arts in Teaching; and Doctor of Management.

The mission of the Eden-Webster Library System is to support the teaching, research, and intellectual pursuits of Eden Theological Seminary and Webster University. To achieve its mission, the Eden-Webster Library System, governed by the provisions of a joint agreement between both institutions and in accordance with the mission statements of the libraries of each school, provides appropriate information resources and services for the institutions' students, faculty, and staff.

The combined collections include over 300,000 volumes and 1,600 current journal subscriptions. The focus of the materials that are housed in the Luhr Library is in the broad fields of religion, theology, mission, and biblical studies, while the collections at the Emerson Library support the varied programs of Webster University. Patrons who are eligible for library cards have the same privileges at both of the libraries.

This unique arrangement is a concrete expression of an imaginative and innovative spirit in higher education. Shared library functions, including acquisitions, serials, cataloging, systems, interlibrary loan, and collection development are overseen by a Cooperative Library Advisory Board.
