Donate to the library

Thank you for your interest in giving to the library.

Webster University’s Emerson Library accepts gifts of books, audiovisual and archival materials that support the mission of the library and conform to the subject collection development and general policies of Emerson Library.  Emerson Library reserves the right to review offers of material carefully and to decline gifts that fall outside the scope of its collecting policies. As per the Webster University Development Office, gifts will only be accepted with a valuation and title list.

All gifts accepted will become the property of Emerson Library upon receipt.  Gifts will not be accepted with conditions or restrictions, and items that are not added to the collection cannot be returned to the donor. The library will determine the retention, location, cataloging and processing of donated items.  Materials not added to the collection may be exchanged, disposed of, or given to other libraries. Most often, materials not added are given to Better World Books which donates profits to literacy partners.

The library accepts donations of materials in the following categories:

  • Materials that support the University's curriculum
  • Materials that strengthen and complement the library's collection
  • Books written by the Webster University faculty
  • Titles that will replace missing items
  • Missing issues of journals when the library subscribes to the journal
  • Historical materials for the University's Archives

Donors with gifts of 1 box or less may leave them at the first floor service desk after filling out the gift form with their information and gift label preferences, and checking the acceptance notice.

Donors with gifts of more than 1 box must contact the Gift Coordinator, Matt Wier, at 314-246-7806 in advance. He will evaluate the offer of materials, working with subject librarians as appropriate. If it appears that the value of the gift will exceed $1,000, the Gift Coordinator must have approval from the University's Gift Acceptance Committee prior to acceptance. Please be aware that when Gift Acceptance Committee approval is required, additional time may be necessary to consider acceptance of the donation.

If you would like to make a donation to the Archives, please contact University Archivist, Kathy Gaynor, at 314-246-7811.

For more information about donating other types of materials, please contact the Gift Coordinator and Head of Access Services, Matt Wier, at 314-246-7806.
